Meet Teacher Julia Banzi - classical guitar

Teacher Julia is an accomplished classical guitarist and seasoned teacher!

Julia Banzi teaches classical, folk and flamenco guitar and is so excited to teach and share music at Mosaic String Academy.

Professor, performer, ethnomusicologist (Ph.D), composer, and one of a very few female flamenco guitarists worldwide. Julia's work reflects her many years of living in Spain and North Africa while touring internationally for decades.  Julia's inspiration: "Big Magic" (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Julia received her Doctorate Degree in ethnomusicology from the University of California Santa Barbara.  She teaches guitar and world music at Lewis & Clark CollegeUniversity of Portland and Portland State University. She seeks to locate that delicate equilibrium between fun, challenge and ease. She believes that musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Her belief in a child's unlimited potential and in educating that noble human spirit was instilled in her since childhood by her late father Dr. John Horn who was a cognitive psychologist and a pioneer in developing theories of multiple intelligence. Her daughter is a ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer.

Jula loves working with children and created the Ali-Ole ensemble where she guides children to create music, musical instruments and dances from around the world. She has been a Young Audiences and Right Brain Initiative roster artist for years. Teaching at Mosaic String Academy is Julia’s way of giving back and giving thanks. Julia continues to pursue Suzuki training and is dedicated to extending the vision of Dr. Suzuki to her students of all ages.

Fluent in Castellano, Julia instructs in both English & Spanish.

Winner of the “Peoples Grammy Award” for “Best World Music Song” nominated for the “Best Contemporary Classical Album.”
